Crawford Priory, Edenwood Roman ditch rampart, Scotstarvit

Seven people did the walk featuring Crawford Priory, Edenwood Roman ditch and rampart, and Scotstarvit Tower on Sunday 30th January 2022 in our first site visit for almost two years.

By kind permission of Fairways restaurant at Elmwood golf course we set off from their car park.  First call was Crawford Priory, an 18th/19th century house, at one time the home of Admiral Cochrane a hero of the Napoleonic wars and of the Greek, Brazilian and Chilean fights for independence.  The house has been left empty since 1968 and is fenced off but with several pairs of eyes present we noticed several features including a metallic box (either a lift or dumb waiter), several metal lintels and internal metal balustrades.

Then on to the only visible remains (a rampart and ditches) of the Edenwood Roman marching camp.

The last site visited was the 17th century Scotstarvit Tower.  The Canmore entry tells us that the builder was a 17th century antiquarian and had the tower built in an older style.
