Wemyss Caves

In March FFAN members had an enjoyable site visit to Wemyss Caves. We were lucky enough to be given an informative guided tour led by Sue Hampstead of Save Wemyss Ancient Caves Society (SWACS), who shared her detailed knowledge of the history and archaeology of these caves on the Firth of Forth shoreline near East Wemyss. A highlight of any visit is the opportunity to see the enigmatic Pictish carvings inscribed on the cave walls, many of which would have been hidden from view without Sue’s expert eye drawing our attention to them. Pictures of some of them from the day are included below…

More about the caves and the role of SWACS in protecting and promoting this important heritage site can be found on their website[ https://wemysscaves.org/]
